Calafell Platja and Segur: aerials facing the sea

A good share of the calls we get from Calafell come from the coastal strip: Calafell Platja and Segur de Calafell, with blocks of flats lined up along the promenade and buildings whose population multiplies in July and August. These installations work in hard conditions:

  • Salt air and direct sun. Masts, clamps and connectors on the roof degrade sooner than they would inland. One corroded joint is enough for a group of channels to disappear.
  • A lot of outlets on one installation. An amplifier that gave plenty of signal when the building had fewer televisions can fall short at summer occupancy.
  • Mobile phone interference. Since the 700 MHz band went over to 5G, equipment with no LTE or 5G filter takes in signal it should not be amplifying and the picture freezes.
  • Alterations with no thought behind them. Residents who change the cable in their own flat or add branches of their own and unbalance everyone else.

When we go into a building like that, we measure at the head-end and at several sockets, find where the signal is being lost and propose the least that will do. Sometimes it is a connector; other times the amplifier is better replaced by a programmable central unit with a filter. It all goes into a free quote first. More under TV aerials and satellite dishes.

The poble and the estates up the hill

Away from the promenade the picture changes. The old core of Calafell, beside the castle, has terraced houses with individual aerials on old roofs, where you have to work carefully not to damage the covering. Inland the estates spread out: Bellamar, Mas Mel, Mas Romeu, Valldemar and Calafell Parc, with detached houses on their own plots.

In these houses we often see:

  • Aerials put up years ago and never realigned, working only fitfully.
  • Coaxial cable crossing the garden or the facade with no protection.
  • Short or poorly anchored masts that move in the wind.
  • Several televisions hanging off a cheap splitter that divides the signal until there is not enough left.

The answer usually means realigning or replacing the aerial, strengthening the fixings and putting the indoor distribution in order. If the house is on high ground, we also check that pines or nearby buildings have not grown up in front of the aerial.

Satellite for European residents and summer visitors

Calafell has a settled community of residents from elsewhere in Europe, as well as visitors who rent for the whole summer. For them, watching television from home matters almost as much as terrestrial does. We fit and realign satellite dishes aimed at Astra 19.2° E, which carries a great many German, French and British channels, and at Hispasat 30° W for Spanish and Portuguese platforms.

In blocks of flats the tidiest answer is a communal dish with a multiswitch: one dish on the roof and satellite signal in every flat that wants it, without balconies full of aerials. On a villa, a well-anchored individual installation with the right LNB is enough.

Wifi and access on seasonal properties

In Calafell we are also asked for work that goes beyond television. In long flats near the beach the router ends up by the front door and the wifi never reaches the terrace; in two-storey villas the connection drops upstairs. We solve it with wired access points or mesh networks, as we explain under wifi solutions.

For associations with a car park or a shared pool, access control with cards or fobs makes it manageable to say who gets in, which is useful in buildings where the tenants change every season.

Holiday lets: a television in every room

In Calafell Platja and Segur de Calafell there are plenty of flats let by the week. The owner usually wants television in the living room and in each bedroom, and often solves it with a splitter behind the furniture. It works until it does not: every output divides the signal and, in a building where the level is already tight, the last set loses its channels.

If you let your flat, you want an installation that will not fail halfway through a stay. We check how many points your line will carry, swap splitters for good tap-offs or, if need be, add a small indoor amplifier set to the right level. And if the building’s head-end is in poor shape, we help you put it to the association with a report of the measurements, so the repair is done once and done properly.

What we check on the first visit

  • The physical state of the aerial, the mast and the fixings.
  • Signal level and quality with a field meter, at the head-end and at your socket.
  • Amplification and filtering against 5G.
  • Cable, tap-offs and connectors.
  • Where relevant, the aim of the satellite dish.

With that we give you a clear quote. We do not replace anything that is working properly.

The route from Salou and the towns nearby

We reach Calafell on the AP-7 in a little under an hour and arrange the visit according to which part of the municipality you are in. We make those Baix Penedès journeys count by also covering El Vendrell, right next door, and Cunit to the north.

Local questions

How does an aerial fault in Calafell Platja differ from one in Bellamar or Valldemar?

Down by the beach it tends to be communal installations punished by salt air. On the estates up the hill we are talking about individual aerials, long cable runs across the plot and, sometimes, aim that was never set properly.

I am a foreign resident in Segur de Calafell. Can you get me my home channels?

It depends which satellite they are on. Many European channels come from Astra 19.2° E and others carry regional restrictions. We tell you what is feasible before installing and size the dish for that reception.

Our association in Calafell Platja wants to control who gets into the car park. Do you do that?

Yes. We fit access control with cards, fobs or a keypad, and it can be combined with cameras and with the video entry system so the association manages users itself.

In Calafell the television is fine but the wifi will not reach the terrace. Is that your line of work?

Yes, we deal with that too. We look at where the router sits and how the home is built, then propose wired access points, a mesh system or powerline, whichever fits.
