Why your wifi does not reach where you need it
A fast fibre line is no use if the connection drops in the bedroom or on the terrace. In most cases the provider is doing its job and the problem sits inside the property:
- A badly placed router: by the front door, inside a cupboard, or at one end of the house.
- Thick walls and concrete floors, which are very common in coastal buildings.
- Several storeys: the signal loses a lot of strength crossing ceilings.
- Interference from the neighbours’ networks, especially in blocks of flats with dozens of routers.
- Too many devices at once: TVs, phones, cameras, consoles and smart home kit.
- Badly placed repeaters, repeating a weak signal and making the speed worse.
If you want to understand it before ringing us, there is a guide on how to extend wifi at home or in the office.
First, get more out of what you already have
New kit is not always needed. We start by measuring, and often part of the problem is solved by moving the router, separating the bands and setting the channels, channel widths and power so they do not clash with the neighbours’ networks. In a block of flats, that adjustment on its own noticeably improves stability.
Today’s routers transmit on several bands:
- 2.4 GHz: reaches further and gets through walls better, but is slower and badly congested in blocks of flats.
- 5 GHz: much faster with less interference, but loses strength sooner through solid walls.
- 6 GHz (wifi 6E and wifi 7): very fast and very clean, with shorter range again.
Mesh wifi systems
A mesh system is made up of several nodes that create a single network with the same name and password. Devices move from one node to the next without dropping. It is the tidiest answer when cable cannot be run, and it works far better than traditional repeaters, because the nodes coordinate with each other.
The key is where each node goes: close enough to talk to one another properly, far enough apart to extend the coverage. We decide that by measuring, not by eye. It is a common job in the residential areas of the Baix Penedès, such as El Vendrell or Calafell, with houses over several floors and gardens.
Wired access points
When network cable can reach each area, access points wired back to the router are the best answer. Each point gets the full speed and shares it out without losing anything on the way. Many are powered by PoE, so they go on the ceiling or high on a wall with no socket nearby.
Sometimes the answer is less wifi, not more: putting the TV, the computer or the console on a cable frees up the wireless network. We install RJ45 points using existing ducts; in buildings with an ICT communal installation we can usually use its ducts. Powerline adapters, which use the electrical wiring, we only suggest after testing them, because how well they work depends a lot on the state of that wiring.
Holiday lets
In a holiday let the wifi is part of the guest experience, and a poor connection is one of the complaints that turns up most in reviews. We work with owners and managers across the Costa Daurada to:
- Give full coverage in the bedrooms, living room and terrace.
- Set up a guest network kept apart from the owner’s, the cameras and the smart home kit.
- Leave a stable configuration that does not depend on rebooting the router every week.
- Prepare the connection for smart TVs. If your guests would rather have satellite channels, see TV aerials and satellite dishes.
Offices, shops and industrial units
In a business the wifi is a working tool: card terminals, computers, printers and, in hospitality, the customer network. We design networks with wired access points and keep the internal network separate from the customer one. In warehouses and units, metal racking and long distances mean each point has to be planned carefully; there is more in better wifi coverage for your business.
If you are going to fit IP cameras, it is worth planning the network at the same time as the CCTV security cameras, because they share cabling and switches.
What affects the quote
- Floor area and number of storeys.
- Building materials and layout.
- Whether cable can be run or wireless is the only option.
- How many users and devices are on at once.
- Outdoor areas you want covered.
We give you a free quote once we have measured the coverage you actually have.
How we work
- We measure the speed beside the router and in every room.
- We identify dead spots, interference and bottlenecks.
- We propose the simplest solution that fixes the problem.
- We install and configure the equipment.
- We measure again in each area to confirm the improvement.
Where we work
We improve wifi coverage in Salou, Cambrils, La Pineda, Tarragona, Reus, El Vendrell, Calafell and Cunit, and across the rest of the areas we cover in the province of Tarragona.
